    Lean Construction

    The first ENCORD workshop on Lean Construction Management in 2007 (Copenhagen) offered a general introduction to the topic. The second ENCORD workshop on Lean Construction Management in 2008 (London) focussed on value creation. The third ENCORD workshop on Lean Construction Management provided a guide to an approach of Lean Construction Management by sharing examples from implemented construction projects, putting a focus on the operational side of the topic.

    Topics of the working group are the “Lean planning process” in general, how to “Reverse Hierarchy”, who could serve as a “Change agents” and what the “Next steps” are after starting a lean approach within a company, including questions like Lean tendering and design, starting a value-based lean supply chain, Lean planning on large building projects, training leaders to be / support / endorse lean, overcoming resistance of individuals, implementing lean in changing environments and conditions wand also capturing a lean planning approach in tools.

    11th ENCORD Lean Construction Workshop April 2015

    The Lean Construction work group had its 11th meeting in Goteburg, April 20-21, hosted by NCC.

    The main topics of the meeting were:

    – Implementation of lean at NCC.

    – Some questions were discussed during the meeting:

    • How do you know lean works?
    • How do people feel the better work environment?
    • How do you get the site to declare defects/problems?
    • How do you improve your own way of working?
    • How do you encourage collaboration / communication?
    • How do you describe your process?
    • Is Last Planner standard?
    • Do you have a system of continuous improvement?
    • To what extent are the subcontractors involved in LP?
    • How VDC / BIM is integrated?
    • What was a special point or event that changed your mind?
    • How do you recognize the improvement of design/quality?

    10th ENCORD Lean Construction Workshop October 2014

    The Lean Construction working group had its 10th meeting in Eindhoven, 14-15 October 2014, hosted by Ballast Nedam.

    The main topics of the meeting were:

    – Site visit production location including presentation IQ-woning.

    – Presentations of successes:

    “Value of Lean Management”
    “(Lean) successes and challanges at IQ”
    “(Lean) successes and challenges at project Coastal Work Katwijk”

    – Interactive session on the topic how to reach the majority:

    How to make the step towards cultural change – ‘Lean is part of our genes’.

    – State of implementation of lean at Ballast Nedam.

    The Lean Construction work group had its 9th meeting in Liechtenstein, April 2-3, hosted by HILTI AG.

    The main topics of the meeting were:

    • How to get it implemented and sustainable
    • Leadership and time to improve
    • Visibility and lean – keep momentum
    • How to keep the energy going – change management
    • Get new input in the way we work, learn in other industry
    • How do we convince others in our organisation – change management
    • Leadership and management support
    • How to get the management fascinated by lean
    • Learn about the domain of leadership – main aspects. Situational leadership along the lean journey.
    • How quick does the change take for construction companies
    • First steps of lean for Hilti
    • How the lean as an operations strategy is incorporated with the rest of the company strategies
    • Organizational impact
    • Cultural impact – how is this integrated with HR

    8th ENCORD Lean Construction Workshop October 2013

    The Lean Construction work group had its 8th meeting in Duisburg, 8-9th of October, hosted by Hochtief and Cai Von Velsen. The aim for the meeting was to focus on Lean leadership as this is perceived as one of the most important factors when starting the transformation towards Lean construction. The objectives for the meeting was to find a definition of what Lean leadership is and in what respect that differs from other leadership.

    There were interesting presentations on the topic followed by a workshop having a deeper dialog trying to identify characteristics for leadership as well as lean leadership. Highlights from presentations are:

    • Corporate culture and teamwork – essential ingredients
    • Common goals
    • Foundations of lean – cooperation and leadership
    • “Every manager is a coach – we do not have traditional managers anymore”
    • No blame culture – failures are not ever individuals
    • Lean just do not happen – it is a matter of shift in mind-set
    • Lean is not about process it is about people
    • All leaders – Go to Gemba
    • Lean leadership is about getting people leading their own processes
    • Lean Coaches and lean managers to train and support

     At the 9th of October the construction site of new administrative building at Düsseldorf airpor was visited. 

     The conclusions and topics for next meeting are:

    • Engagement in supply-chain –  Suppliers involvement
    • Client engagement
    • Define characteristics / behavior
    • Why do we have difficulties to reach managers – How to reach “sticky middle“
    • Means to how to reach managers
    • Stories of success
    • Levels of trust – How we measure trust?
    • How to link lean to balance score card?
    • Which CPI for lean are the rights?

    7th ENCORD Lean Construction Workshop March 2013

    On the 19th and 20th of March 2013 lean Construction Experts from ENCORD companies and Vinci Paris met at the head office and the Louis Vuitton construction site in Paris.

    Topics of the meeting included:

    – An introduction to the head office of Vinci Paris.
    – A short review of the four web meetings since last workshop in Ludwigshafen.
    – An interactive workshop to discuss and to complete the indicators to define the value of lean
    – Best practice presentations of Bam Nuttall, Zueblin, Strabag and CCC.
    – A visit of a construction site of Vinci Paris.

    The meeting also included:
